Deep Inside My Thoughts

God Damn Outlook!

by Bobosan on Apr.11, 2007, under Main

I finally have installed Office 2007 on the laptop.  I installed Vista on here two months ago, and somehow I’ve been managing without Word, and more specifically Outlook for some time.  Outlook used to be the start of my day, where I would read email, and plan out my day.   Since then, I’ve checked my email only (gasp!!!) every two or three days.

Part of the reason I’ve held off on the new Office is because of the hassle of redownloading my old email.  Gmail in the past, has had some issues where entire mailboxes just go ‘poof’, taking with them email address as well as recieved mail.  In most of these cases, recovery was impossible.  To safeguard against this, as well as having my mail easily searchable regardless of being online or not; I’ve always kept local copies on my computer.

I have email going back to early 2003 saved on Gmail, and use about 700MB of storage for roughly 7,000 emails.   Importing all those into a new computer takes a huge ammount of time, as well as button clicking.  Try as  I might, I’ve never been able to find a way to get Outlook to download all 700MB at once, and I have to keep reclicking ’send/recieve’ over and over again, it 20MB batches.   It’s really frustrating.

After all My email is imported, I have to go back and recreate my filtering rules, as well as some Outlook options I prefer other than the default.    So it takes a few hours to get things set up just right.

Hopefully after all that time, I can be productive again.  ;)
