Deep Inside My Thoughts

Settling Into My New Apartment

by Bobosan on Jan.12, 2007, under Main

This place is finally starting to feel a lot more like home.  I went out and got a new desk and chair for the place, and finally, my computer isn’t sitting on the ground anymore.  Which is great, because it really killed my back to lay down, and try to play Oblivion or Everquest.  I should be alot more comfortable now.

Putting together new furniture is always an exercise in frustration for me. The office chair wasn’t too bad at all, and only took like 15 minutes to assemble.  Like my old chair, I bought this thing from Walmart too.   Compared to more expensive, office store type places, I really can’t tell a difference in the feel and comfort of it.  And hey, Wally World saved me $50 over their competitor.  So I’ve got a nice brown leather chair to sit next to my desk now.
The desk on the other was pure hell.  The thing weighed in at 230 pounds, and I tried to move it into my apartment, up a half flight of stairs, and then down another flight myself.  Thankfully, a kind neighbor helped me out halfway through when he realized I was actually stupid enough to try to move a desk that size alone.  I never did get his name.

So right after I get the desk inside my apartment, and open it up, I realized I needed a hammer.  Two months ago a hammer wouldn’t have been a tall order, but I ended up driving all the way out to Walmart so I could get a hammer for less than $15.

By the time I got back from grabing a hammer, and getting a bite to eat, it was 10 p.m. and too late to hammer while an apartment complex full of people tried to sleep.  So I just went about roughing stuff, screwing the cam bolts in where I could, and assembling what I could without hammering.
I screwed the keyboard rails to the right piece of wood, but O’sullivan hadn’t pre-drilled any holes in this one.  Right after I get the damn keyboard tray onto my desk, all four screws splinter out.

I’ve got the desk all together now, except for the keyboard tray, which I’m probably gonna have to fix myself.  I think Lowes cut’s wood to size, and it shouldn’t be more than $5 or so for a piece of wood from there.   Toss in some screws, and maybe a drill bit, and  I’ll have the damn thing finished in less than $15.

Why is it that things always go wrong when assembling your own furniture?  Especially from O’sullivan?   My last Sauder desk went up in an hour and a half, no problem.   But this one, took about three hours to put up, not as sturdy, and designed pretty damn poorly.
