Deep Inside My Thoughts

Burn Bitch Burn

A few weeks ago, I screwed up while installing Gentoo Linux, and overwrote my bootsector on my hard drive. It was such an elementeray mistake, but because I installed Window’s XP on a drive that wasn’t Master, I got confused counting drives and entered the wrong disk. So, because my WinXP drive was miscounted, so was the boot partition for Gentoo. Alas, I had destroyed my bootloader!

So, for a few weeks I had to use a WinXP cd to boot into windows. A few days ago, I wanted to install the x64 version of WinXP, so I formated my hard drives, and sat down to reinstall. I was looking forward to having a copy of Window’s that didn’t require me to boot of a cd.

Everything was going fine, until I encountered an error during the install process. The error, MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION means a bad processor or RAM. I had assumed I hit the CPU fan while trying to remove the drive cages, and damaged the die. So I knew the CPU was damaged, so what do I do?

My motherboard allows a Front Side Bus of up to 599. My Athlon 64 3200 runs at 2Ghz, so the clock speed is 10x on it. Usually, a FSB of 200 would be used, and 200 x 10 = 2.0Ghz. I was so pissed off at my computer, I decided to see how long it would last under “heavy usage”. So of course, I removed all the cards in my system, set my FSB to 599 (which is astronomical), and turned the power on. My little 2.0Ghz processor ran at 5.99Ghz for about half a seccond before dying. It was a great moment in life.

So now, I’m looking for a new mobo and processor, and thanking your god for credit cards. It’s beautiful!
